Getting the hang of this cloth diapering thing…

diaper cover

After being appalled by the amount of dirty diapers produced by our older son, we decided to use cloth diapers this time around. We started out using cute little diaper covers that held the cloth in place without using pins.

I love those diaper covers and would happily use them exclusively, but we only have a couple of them and we were constantly having to hand wash and then quickly dry them to keep enough on hand. So I went on Amazon and ordered a bunch of the classic little “plastic pants” (and an extra dozen prefold diapers, just to make sure we always had enough!)

When it was time for us to mostly use pins and plastic pants, pretty much because Corben had one too many growth spurts and grew out of his newborn size diaper covers, I had a hard time getting the hang of it. The cloth never seemed to be tight enough around the legs, and every time he pooped it would come shooting out of it. Finally after much frustration and a fair amount of tears, I figured out a pinning system that seems to be working.

Then my dear friend Joye sent me a wonderful gift – 10 Fuzzi Bunz diapers! I have decided that these are by far my favorite. We use them for nighttime, because they are much more absorbent than the prefolds. And they’re so cute, too!

I think, now that Corben is six weeks old, we’ve finally got a good collection of diapers together and things are going pretty smoothly. I like having an assortment of diapers. Mostly prefold diapers, plastic covers, and pins; a couple of pinless covers, and enough Fuzzi Bunz for nighttime and running errands around town. (I find it more convenient to use the FB while out and about than the plastic pants and pins, although this is just a personal preference!)

I’ve really learned that there are so many different kinds of cloth diapers, there is a kind for anyone out there! I feel good that we are not throwing mountains of diapers into the trash, and the whole process of cloth diapering is much easier than I thought it would be.
