The Frugal Husband and I haven’t had cable TV since we lived in our first tiny apartment after college. At first it was just because we couldn’t afford the bills we had, so we got rid of anything that wasn’t essential – like TV. Now, though, we really love not having it. It’s great to not have that monthly bill, but we also find that we have more control over watching the shows we enjoy, when we have time to watch them. If you have a decent internet connection, it’s so easy to watch shows and movies on the internet.
We do pay a $10 per month payment to Netflix, which is how we watch movies and lots of series of shows – a much better bargain than going to the store and renting a DVD each time we want to see a movie. Their watch instantly streaming feature is awesome. We watch all kinds of our favorite shows on there – Mythbusters, all of the Law and Order series, The Office, Bones, 24, King of the Hill, and so many more. And there are tons of great kids shows and movies that are streaming on Netflix, too.
There are a great many web sites that will let you watch shows and movies for free. Here are some of our favorites.
I challenge you! Try it for a month. If you can’t survive without TV, then by all means go back to it. But you may be pleasantly surprised to find that it’s just as easy (if not more so!) to watch your favorite shows online, and then you’ll be able to say goodbye forever to that annoying cable bill.
